Monk is a Gothic novel by English writer Matthew Gregory Lewis, first published in 1796. This novel, known for its gloom and frankness, has become one of the most scandalous and influential works of Gothic literature. The plot of the novel tells about the fall of Ambrosio, a pious monk from Madrid, whose virtue is gradually destroyed under the influence of temptations.
